What is the Medefine Academy?

A programme run by doctors to get you ready for medical school. You get a personal mentor, teaching on UCAT, personal statements and interviews, help choosing universities, and clinical and research experience to write about.

Live group sessions on medicine, taught by doctors

Each month there is a live online session on a part of medicine that strong applicants know about. Younger students cover things like what CPR is really like, the brain, AI in medicine, misinformation and global health. Older students move on to ethics and law, scientific reasoning, UCAT and interviews.

Sessions are led by doctors, and sometimes guest speakers and patients, so students hear how care actually works from the people doing it.

A monthly 1:1 with your own mentor

Every student has a personal mentor, a doctor or medical student, and meets them once a month. Many of our mentors went to international schools themselves, so they understand the choices and pressures students face.

Each meeting starts with a check-in on school, wellbeing and progress. The rest is spent on whatever matters most at that point, from subject choices to UCAT, personal statements or interview practice.

Clinical and research experience you can reflect on

Students take part in our online clinical internship with NHS doctors and our research internship with UCL researchers, which run in set blocks during the year.

In-person work experience depends on what is available locally. We help students look for opportunities where they live and make the most of them.

What matters to medical schools is what you understood from an experience, so mentors help students reflect on each one properly.

A health project of your own

Every student completes at least one personal project with support from their mentor. Past projects include research essays and posters, health awareness campaigns, podcasts, a cookbook, school initiatives and infographic series.

Students plan it, run it and present it themselves, which gives them something real to talk about in applications and interviews.

Guides and materials for each stage

Students get project briefs, workbooks and guides through our learning platform, so families can see what is coming next without trawling through conflicting advice online.

Friends and mentors around the world

Students join peers from international schools around the world who share an interest in healthcare, and get to know doctors, medical students and academics along the way.

Many of our alumni come back as mentors and conference ambassadors.

UCAT preparation and exam strategy

Students work through every UCAT section with guidance on technique and timing, and practise with realistic questions.

Starting early means the test feels familiar by the time you sit it, rather than something to cram for over one summer.

Personal statement guidance and review

You write your statement with your mentor, who already knows you and what you have done.

Because you have internships, a project and months of reflection behind you, you are not starting from a blank page. The aim is a statement that sounds like you and shows how you think.

Interview preparation with practising doctors

Mock interviews with doctors and medical students, in MMI and panel formats, with honest feedback after each one.

You can practise with several different tutors, so you get used to different styles of questioning, ethics scenarios included.

Our mentors are doctors and medical students, and many of them applied to medicine from international schools just like yours. They know the questions about fee status, choosing between countries and fitting UCAT around IB or A levels, because they have dealt with them.

How Medefine Academy works

Each year leads into the next. Year 11 lays the groundwork, Year 12 is about experience and planning, and Year 13 is the application itself. You can join at any point and we will plan around where you are.

How to apply to the Medefine Academy

Limited Places for Ambitious Students

Applying to the Medefine Academy starts with a short online application, followed by a call with one of our doctors to talk about your goals and check the Academy is the right fit. We keep each year group small so that every student gets proper attention.

    Submit Application

    Complete the online application form at any point during the year.

    Review & Introductory Call (Student + Parent)

    Selected students and their parent(s) join a call with a Medefine doctor.

  3. 03

    Conversation with a Doctor

    Students are then invited to a more in-depth interview with a doctor.

  4. 04

    Offer and Enrolment

    Students who are a good fit receive an offer and begin onboarding into their cohort.

Frequently asked questions

Which parts of the application do you cover?

All of it: choosing universities and countries, UCAT, your personal statement, interviews, and what to do once offers arrive.

How do you help with choosing universities?

Your mentor goes through your grades, UCAT score, preferred countries and fee status with you, then helps you build a sensible shortlist.

How do UCAT, the personal statement and interviews fit together?

UCAT preparation starts early so it is not a last-minute rush. Your statement draws on your internships and project. Interview practice builds on both, with several tutors.

How personal is the support?

Your monthly mentor meetings are about you. Group sessions cover the shared material, and your mentor fills the gaps for your situation.

Can I join partway through?

Yes. Students join in Year 11, 12 and sometimes Year 13. We'll look at where you are and plan the rest of the year around it.

How much time does it take?

Around 6 to 8 hours a month, more in the weeks before UCAT and interviews. It is planned around school and exams.

Is it online or in person?

The Academy runs online. Some events and experiences take place in person in Hong Kong, Singapore, the UAE and the UK.

What happens after I get my offers?

We help you compare offers and get ready for the move to medical school. Many students stay in our community, and some come back as mentors.

Is financial help available?

Yes. Around 20% of our Academy students attend free of charge, and we offer bursaries. Mention it on your introductory call.
